You can run, but you can’t hide when it comes to worms – and we’re not talking about the ones in your garden!
Worms! Uck! It’s almost impossible to stop your pet from coming into contact with worms throughout its life, and parasites such as these can live within your pet without your knowledge. Certain worms can also pose risks to us and our children. A regular worming regime will protect you and your pet from these unwanted guests!

The most common types of internal parasites your pets will encounter are the common roundworm and tape worm. Puppies and kittens can have roundworms from as young as 2 weeks of age. Roundworm infection can cause lethargy, bloating, diarrhea, and weight loss. This type of roundworm can also infect people, with children being particularly at risk. Dogs and cats can become infected via contaminated soil and from eating infected prey or raw meat. The most common tapeworm of dogs and cats is Dipylidium caninum, which is transmitted via fleas. Often referred to as “rice-like” in appearance, their presence can be confirmed by their occurrence on or near your pet’s anus.

We recommend worming your pet at least twice per year. However, young animals and those in a higher risk environment may require worming more regularly. For effective dosing an accurate weight is recommended – if you are unsure about your pet’s weight we welcome you to pop in to our clinic for a weigh-in, at no charge of course. Our staff will be pleased to advise you about a suitable worming regime for your needs.
